GEP MI TRIP TO TIOMAN, MALAYSIA
On
March 11th 2003,
twenty-eight students from Secondary Three GEP embarked on a four
day three night Multiple Intelligences (MI) Trip to Pulau Tioman,
Malaysia.
Based
on the theoretical premise of utilising different assessment methods
to cater to the students various learning preferences and
needs, the trip not only provided students with enjoyable first
hand experiences of the many ecosystems of Tioman - in the form
of guided jungle treks, mangrove walks, a beach surveys and snorkeling
excursions - but also with the opportunity for creative assessment
in the form of MI presentations.
The students were divided into groups and given one of two projects
to complete upon their return.
The
projects, which centered on the scenario of building new resorts
on the island, tested their ability to work as a unit, think critically
and affectively to weigh the need for economic development against
the need for environmental conservation and creatively utilized
their findings in an oral presentation that would most effectively
communicate their thesis to their peers.
The
most successful groups realized the potential of their various intelligences
as tools of learning, and applied them accordingly in a number of
creative ways.
In addition to its objectives, the trip also served to foster greater
class unity, build confidence as well as develop a greater appreciation
for the complex and fragile nature of tropical ecosystems.
